How to get from Colombo Airport to Weligama: taxi, train or highway bus.
You've landed, you're jet-lagged, and Weligama is still 2 to 3 hours away. Here's exactly how to get here, whichever way you choose to travel.
Private chauffeur — the easiest and fastest option
The most direct route, door to door: a private driver arranged by your host — or us, if you're staying at Lanka Surf House — waiting for you right at arrivals.
No surprises, no negotiating, no waiting around — just a fixed rate and a trusted driver who knows the way. It's the best option if you're carrying heavy or bulky luggage, and honestly, after a long flight, it's the one that lets you just relax the moment you land.
Journey time: 2 to 2.5 hours from the airport to Weligama

By train — the scenic (and cheap) option
There's no direct train from the airport itself — you'll first need to get to Colombo Fort railway station. Two options: a taxi (around €25–30, 45 minutes to an hour) or the airport bus — look for Bus 187, which runs every 30 minutes and costs next to nothing (around €1), taking about an hour. From Fort, the coastal line runs straight down the south coast, hugging the ocean most of the way. It's one of the great train rides in Sri Lanka, and one of the cheapest: a 2nd class ticket costs next to nothing.
The most convenient stop for reaching Lanka Surf House is Kumbalgama Railway Station — the small village station, one stop before Weligama itself.
Journey time: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Colombo Fort to Kumbalgama, depending on the train
From Kumbalgama to the house:
On foot — about 10 minutes. Fine most of the day, but be mindful on hot, sunny afternoons; it can feel longer than it looks.
By tuk tuk — the easier option, just 3 minutes from the station to the house. We can arrange one for you, or you'll find plenty waiting right outside the station. Agree on the price before getting in — for a ride this short, it shouldn't cost more than 500 rupees.
By highway bus — the budget option
The cheapest way down, if you don't mind a bit more hassle. AC express buses run from Colombo along the Southern Expressway to Matara, a smooth, direct ride that skips most of the traffic you'd hit on the old coastal road.
Journey time: around 2.5 hours from Colombo to Matara
Cost: roughly €1–2 per person
From Matara to the house: the highway bus won't drop you in Weligama itself, so you'll need a short tuk tuk from Matara onward — about 20 minutes, roughly €5, easy to arrange right at the bus station.
Worth knowing before you book: this is the most economical option, but also the least practical if you're travelling with a surfboard or a lot of luggage. Buses can get crowded, and there's no guaranteed space for boards.
Which one should you pick?
If you'd rather not think about logistics after a long flight — go with the private transfer. If you've got time, a light bag, and want the classic Sri Lanka train experience — take the train. If you're travelling on a tight budget and packing light — the highway bus will get you there for a couple of euros.
Whichever you choose, once you're on the last tuk tuk stretch into the village, you'll know you've made it.
